 First Work Day

Monday June 20th, 2021

Today was our first day working in the clinic for the week.  We were not sure how it was going to go with the covid restrictions etc but all in all, it ran pretty smoothly.  I started the day in Pharmacy with Josie and we helped get some of the drugs labeled and put on shelves before clinic began.  Lots to organize and figure out in pharmacy but it is a well oiled machine.  There’s a great system in place for gathering the medications needed and checks and balances to make sure the correct drugs are give out.

We did not see a ton of patients today and it certainly was not as busy as it is usually. We are not sure why, but it may have something to do with covid or just that the word has not gotten out yet.  Only 25 people at a time were allowed to come into the clinic and restrictions were put in place, so that slowed things a little.

We had two people who were tested for Covid and both came back negative!  This community has been hit very hard with covid so it is definitely a blessing that we did not see any covid cases today.

After lunch, Mike, Maryann, Donna and myself headed over the special needs school/new church land to see the new office and also to say hello to Tomas and Irma.  We got to see inside their new house that was built by the mission.  Tomas and Irma lost every thing, including their home in the 2 hurricanes that came through last year.  They had been living under a tarp shelter on the land when Mike and a few others met them in February. They have been caring for the land and acting as caretakers for the special needs school.  As a way of showing appreciation for their care of the property we fundraised for a house to be built for them to live in.  The house is on the corner of the property where the new church/feeding center will be built, hopefully starting this November.  Tomas and Irma are both elderly but physically able to do much on the land.  They had planted so many vegetables and flowers and made their little corner look beautiful.  It is a good day when you get hand the keys to a home to two essentially homeless elderly people.

Folks back at home in the Wisconsin and Illinois churches, had heard about Tomas and Irma earlier in the year and many people wanted to show their care and concern and donate to help purchase a housewarming gift for them.  We were able to purchase a small refrigerator and small table a chairs!  They were both touched by the fact that so many people they have not met, wanted to help them and send hope.  Such a blessing.

After we took Tomas and Irma back to their house, we headed back to the church to pick up the rest of the team.  We headed to dinner and then had our evening devotion before cleaning up and turning in for the night.

We shall see what tomorrow brings in clinic!

Blessings, Shelley B.
