Last work day

Today was our last work day of the week.  We typically pack up on Thursday afternoon and leave Tocoa/La Ceibita area on Friday am to break up the drive up towards San Pedro Sula.  Tomorrow we will come together over a team dinner and spend time with our translators celebrating and thanking them for their invaluable service to us this week.  They are truly a part of our team.

Pharmacy was a little slower today which is good because we were running out of some of the more common drugs.  Today I met the youngest patient and the oldest patient!  The youngest patient was 10 days old and the oldest was 110!

All week long, because of the size of our team out here, we have been divided into a specific group to make devotions a little easier to manage. We do small group devotions in the morning and then all gather in the evening for devotion and reflection on the day.  Here is my small group, the “wings” - women in God’s service.

During the week, there has been a little girl hanging around the pharmacy area and I found that she was a child who is not attending school as she needs to be in a special needs school.  She is just about non verbal and I am estimating she is around 7 years old.  Her name is Jocelyn.  She is a very sweet little girl and the story I have heard is that her mother is an alcoholic and she refuses to take her to the special needs school.  I decided when we had some down time I was going to try to spend some time getting to know her a little bit and also find out more about her life/family and if there was any way we can help her.  The jury is still out on that, because even if there was a way to get her in the Becas program that sponsors kids to go to school, and to get her transportation, she would still need someone to make sure she gets up and dressed for school every day.  We take for granted the services that are available to us in the USA.  There is no child protective service here and the ability to get her into a foster home.  But, I am sure going to try to figure out something.  It’s a heart breaking situation that this little girl just wanders around the village all day.
Me with Jocelyn.

Since we got the clinic packed up we had a little down time and so we decided to spend a little time exploring the village.  We visited the Central de salud where we have had women’s health nurses, nurses screening school kids for head lice and other things, a dentist and ear cleanings.  These nurses have had a busy busy week!  We took a little time to check out the river in the village and visit with the school kids in La Ceibita.  All in all it was a good day, ending with a wonderful church service in La Ceibita.
