First work day and cook it until its crooked!

Today was the first day of the medical mission in full swing.  The clinic was set up in the church the night before and pharmacy got their stuff set up this am.  At about 10:30am they started seeing patients and I think the estimate of patients was about 200.  Over 1000 prescriptions were written.  Ears were cleaned in the Central de Salud, dental procedures done and the nurses worked with the ladies with women’s health.  Lots of people a little bit healthier today with the work of the doctors and nurses on the team.  Our translators are a priceless part of our mission and we could not do this work without them.  Some of them learning way more about certain health things than they thought they would ever know.

I spent the morning observing the training of the volunteers for VBS.  The two North American VBS leaders spent time talking with Pastor Orlin before they came to figure out a curriculum for the VBS based on what the children are being taught or their theme for the week.  So Maryann and Nancy teach the volunteers how to do VBS so that we can simply be helpers, and support.  Our goal with missions is to always leave it so that the community we leave behind can continue to teach and do the things they want to do.  So we spent the morning teaching and going over materials and schedules until they were confident they knew what they were doing.  Tuesday is the first full day of VBS.  They will have a morning and afternoon session both Tuesday and Wednesday.  I took lots of notes, videos and photographs to share with our team back at home for our trip in June.  My hope is that we can continue the wonderful work that the Sullivan team has done with consistency so that there is no confusion and we can help strengthen the ministry.

We broke for lunch and then after a little while the team got back to work in their various areas.  Nancy started teaching the women some baking skills in small groups.  They made cookies and a cake.  This is something that the women have asked to do and so it is fun to be able to teach them how to do this so that they can continue when we are gone.   At this time I did not have a specific area I was working in so I went back and forth a few times between the baking ministry and clinic, observing and taking lots of photos.  After a few hours I sat and just watched the people in the clinic. It’s pretty interesting watching the fluid movement of the clinic and the patients coming in and going out.  Pastor Orlin sat next to me and we chatted in broken Spanish and super slow google translate for some time.  I joked that I was “bored” (I really wasn’t) and a little while later Pastor Orlin came back with a translator and asked me if I would like to help the women in the kitchen as they were preparing a snack.  I said absolutely!  So we marched back there and I was quickly put to work frying over 200 tortillas for a Honduran snack.  Catracha is the name of it.  It’s a fried tortilla with refrained beans and cheese.  Super yummy.  I asked Candida when I knew the tortilla was done and she said, “when it is crooked!”  I guess I have never heard that way of describing anything in cooking terms before! So I watched and sure enough, they became “crooked”. It was hot and I was dripping by the time I was done, but I had fun and then we got to eat the delicious Catracha’s.

The team closed up for the day, headed back to the hotel and after a while we walked over to dinner and then followed with devotion and sharing for the day.  It was a great first day and everyone is ready to go to sleep!

Blessings!
